Question by The Cat's Meow: "Doomsday 2012" – Solar storms, will it affect us?
I know this is a redundant topic, but I'm just curious as to what people think is going to happen in our near future? I'm not talking about the whole "Mayan prophecy end of days" stuff, but about the solar storms that scientist are predicting to occur around 2011-2012. Do you think that it will happen? If so, do you think it will interfere with our satellites and blow out all of our electric grids? Or do you think that it will just pass by without us noticing like it does every 11 years?

If you do think that this solar storm will affect our satellites and electricity, then what do you think will become of our planet? It would be like going back in time 100 years.
I believe that I clearly said my question was NOT about the Mayan prophecy but about solar storms, which do happen. Crack a book.

Some time ago there was a calculation that the next peak in solar activity would be higher than usual. However since then the estimates have been revised downwards and it may be that the next peak will be about average.

In addition, last I heard the peak is likely to come in the first half of 2013, probably about March.

While it is possible that power transmission will be affected, this is most likely where the systems are already strained. This sort of thing generally lasts a few hours or days at the most even where power transmission systems are strained.

Power transmission engineers often deal with this by load shedding, which is turning off power in some areas while maintaining it in others, then swapping over, typically for an hour or 90 minutes at a time. In some systems, water heaters and air conditioners can be turned off remotely, and these may be turned off by the engineers to reduce load. Lighting and other systems will still work.

As for communications, for those dependent on satellites there may be trouble, though satellites have special electronics and shielding to withstand exactly that sort of thing. Much ground based communication is now by optical fibre cable and that is unlikely to be affected at all.

First, let's clear up a misunderstanding. The Mayans made no prediction of the end of the world. Their calendar just happens to end in 2012. Being a cyclical calendar, it just starts over from the beginning again.

Second, what reasons do Christians (who do follow this 2012 doomsday prophecy) have for believing a supposed Mayan prophecy? What is the evidence, from a Christian perspective, that this completely foreign culture's calendar ending on a particular date = the Rapture, Second Coming, Armageddon, or just plain old ending of the world?

This is, obviously, for those Christians who follow the 2012 "prophecy" and not for those Christians who DO NOT follow the 2012 prophecy, though all are welcome to give their insight.
Prema… by "(mistaken)" I mean that there is no such prophecy – it is mistaken that there is such a Mayan prophecy.

I don't attend movies much, but I was at a theater yesterday and saw a
coming attractions trailer for an upcoming movie from Sony pictures called …. "2012."

Yep. Complete with images of seas boiling, volcanoes erupting, and human history ending .. with a voice over talking about the old Mayan calendar etc.

For months now, I've been seeing questions in the R&S group about the year 2012. I'm now wondering — how many of these were genuine queries by people scared about the future? How many were planted questions designed to promote the movie?

Does anybody in here, from whatever atheist or religious perspective, have a sense of how much of the 2012 hype is "real' apocalypticism, and how much is film industry PR?

Im not scared or anything, but this has been bothering me. I mean, theres the movie "2012", and the Mayans. But for the Mayans, its just that some guy that didnt have enough space to keep track of time and said "Oh, the world will end on that date." Is there actually proofs, or signs, that we're near the end of the world?

I'm just morbidly curious about the hype on this "2012" ordeal. All I know is that it has something to do with the fact that the Mayan Calendar ends that year, and so therefore the world is going to end on December 21st 2012?

I saw the movie..haha but the science of it seems plausible. I don't want to critique something to judge something unless I know what it IS.

So, I don't want to spend large amounts of time researching this…so instead, can someone give me a simple explanation of what this whole theory is about? thanks!!
