Yikes! Just how big was the magnitude 8.8 earthquake in Chile? One scientist says the shaking may have affected the entire planet by shifting Earth on its axis. This possibly may have shortened the length of each day on Earth by about 1.26 microseconds. Using a complex model JPL research scientist Richard Gross computed how Earth's rotation should have changed as a result of the Feb. 27, 2010 quake. If his figures are correct, the quake should have moved Earth's figure axis (the axis about which Earth's mass is balanced) by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters, or 3 inches). Earth's figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis; they are offset by about 10 meters (about 33 feet). By comparison, Gross said the same model estimated the 2004 magnitude 9.1 Sumatran earthquake should have shortened the length of day by 6.8 microseconds and shifted Earth's axis by 2.32 milliarcseconds (about 7 centimeters, or 2.76 inches). Gross said that even though the Chilean earthquake is much smaller than the Sumatran quake, it is predicted to have changed the position of the figure axis by a bit more for two reasons. First, unlike the 2004 Sumatran earthquake, which was located near the equator, the 2010 Chilean earthquake was located in Earth's mid-latitudes, which makes it more effective in shifting Earth's figure axis. Second, the fault responsible for the 2010 Chiliean earthquake dips into Earth at a slightly steeper angle than does the fault responsible for the 2004 …

i have worried a little about the 2012 prediction. i have done a lot of research about it and have of course come accross the false websites and the true ones, like NASA. i am christian so this does not fit into my religion.

it does make me sorta worry though because the mayans were very precise with their calendar.
i would just like to know what started the whole "world is coming to an end on december 21, 2012" because the calendar ends. people say it just starts over. but what came about the world ending?
i would also like to know if they made any predictions. ive heard they predicted 9 11. is that true?

So, you remember those really cool peeps down in Central America, the Mayans? Ya, well, their calendar stops on December 21st, 2012. Quite frankly, I am surprised that they made it THAT far.
Reasons that the world WILL end on December 21st, 2012:
-Those darn Mayans said so
-The Hollywood movie "2012" says so.
-McKenna looked at the "I Ching" dynasty's old hyroglyphics, put them on an accurate chart to predict the future, and it ends on the date 12/21/12
-NASA predicts solar storms are coming
-The Bible says stuff about the world ending "when Israel becomes a nation, then the end is near" (it became a nation in 1948), or "the environment will be a disgrace" or something like that.
-Planets will be aligned.

Reasons that the world will NOT end on 12/21/12:
-NO ONE really knows when the world is gonna end, not even those darn Mayans.
-Everyone knows that if you take decent actors, mix them with a nice director, top it off with apocolypse, and bake it for an hour and fifty minutes, you will have a Hollywood hit.
-God promised he would never drown the world again, so the chances of the land suddenly going up like the Titanic and sinking into the ocean (as though the ocean could hold us all and all the land) is VERY unlikely.
-The odds that a GIANT meteor the size of Russia making it through the atmosphere without dicinigrating before it hits us, and stopping randomly in space just so hit will fall out of space and hit us is HIGHLY unlikely.
-God spoke of how the world would not end until EVERYONE knew the grace and goodness of God. We are only like, 62% the way there, big guy.
-Such a random date!
-Do you know how many times the apocolypse has been predicted in one way or another? About 28 times! And that's just what is on records!
-God loves us WAYYYYY too much to just let us die a slow, painful, end-of-the-world death.
-The world will only end when God says it will.

So what do you think? Answer if you think that the world is gonna end or if it won't! And state your reasons!

The world isn't going to end 2012. That's waay too early.

One day, in the DISTANT future the sun will die out just like every other star so we know we won't be around forever. Though humans will be extinct way before the sun dies.

Even if WIII started today, 2012 isn't enough time

Ok … The Mayan Calendar ends on Dec. 21, 2012 . Then in their writtings ; we find that they say that the" World as we know it" will cease to be on Dec. 21st 2012 …. and that we will enter a new cycle on the earth plane…

Now, Nostradamus, who knew nothing about the Mayans … also says that the Earth as we know it will cease to be on Dec. 21st 2012 ……..

We also have to take into account the Predictions of the "Wizzard" Merlin (No; he was not a myth) … he has made some very accurate predictions for the future …

Next; read the I Ching … it too , says that 2012 will be the end of times as known today …..

There were predictions made in the 1600's by a "Mother Shipton" thru a English Writter, Richard Head . Many though that Richard was just doing Post Dictions or writing that "Mother Shipton" had predicted something AFTER it occurred …However; we now find MANY of the "Mother Shipton" predictions for furure events were and are VERY accurate …… so we have to give creedence to them …

We also have the Hoppi Native American Indian Tribes in the American Southwest ….. their tales and stories carry predictions of events that will happen in the year 2012 ; that could spell the end of the world as we know it .. or going into the 5th world cycle …..

Look at the Book of revelations written by John in the Bible . Study what it says , and we "Could" be in thet era now .. as the end of time as we know it draws near ….

Then; we go to the Bible Code .. which says that the "Beginning of the End of the World as we Know it begins on March 12, 2012" ….

Im not sure if all of these things have to do with all of the earthquakes-tsunamis-nasa says solar flares are higher-global warming.

MY Thoughts: That the 3rd World War will begin on March 12, 2012 … since it will be a necular /atomic war ..it signals the end of the world as we know it ..as NOTHING can be the same after a full fledged atomic war ……. Then; On Dec. 21st 2012 ; the war ends …. the world now has to start fresh to rebuild what has been destroyed ..as there will probably be NO cell Towers, No Electricity , No Gas or Fuel … Low Water supplies … etc … Food ?. ……. OR:

Will another giant Asteroid or Many Giant Asteroids like the
one that hit Siberia in 1904 that destroyed a 1,000 mile radius and killed 100's of people begin propelling the Earth ?
Just THINK of the destruction and cahos …. and; Scientist and the World governments are already worried about this occurance and how to prevent it … IF they can …. as they feel it is destined to occur ….

We can't just stick our collective heads up our butts and ignor how serious this could be or actually IS already .. Time is running out and what are YOU doing ?

Why are people believing that the world will end 21st december, 2012?

I have a small question. I am curious, as to why people seem to be thinking it, as many have before about the previous "world ending dates"

Why are people believing that the world will end 21st december, 2012?
I've googled it, and there are a lot of stories coming up about numerous things like "the Mayan Calendar" which is the only one that actually mentions this "world ending" and there are a couple of articles on the NASA website, about 2012, and 2013. Neither of which mention a "world ending". But only of a "new solar cycle" and "solar storm", people are getting really freaked out about the world ending on the specific date of 21st December, 2012 at 11.11pm GMT
So why are people actually believing it – and would it actually happen?

And if this story has been going round for a while – why has it not broke world news?

And there is a film coming out on 13th November, 2009 about the "world ending" Is this where people are getting it from? because a lot of people are starting to believe it will actually happen!

Could a Solar Cycle, or Solar Storm – End the world? there is a lot of rubbish floating around about this event, as there was with the previous world ending dates.

Sorry if this may be an inconvenient question and a complete waste of time reading it.
But i would like to know, as my curiosity is getting the better of me!
my nextdoor neighbour is actually freaking about it considering he is 15! i personally believe the whole lot is rubbish and will not happen for thousands and thousands of years to come.

I Am trying to get a grasp of how some humans seem to be able to mentally transcend time. I know that our brains have neural networks with energy zooming around through them at the speed of light.

I also have read some of the works of Edgar Cayce, who spent some time curing the ill as well as forecasting the future. I was most impressed with his prediction of a Polar Shift to have taken place in 1998: Today, such a shift has been detected in progress.

"Cayce predicted changes to the earth surface to begin some time between 1958 and 1998. The cause of these dramatic earth changes will be the shift in the world's magnetic poles around the year 2000. Cayce predicted that when this pole shift occurs it would begin reversals in the world's climate so that:

'..where there has been a frigid or semi-tropical climate, there will be a more tropical one, and moss and fern will grow.'

Cayce's prediction of a pole shift occurred in 1998. According to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, in 1998 something changed the earth's gravitational field which moved the magnetic poles closer together. The NASA article explained that as the ice on the poles melted, ocean currents moved water toward the equator, which factors researchers believe to be partly responsible, in conjunction with shifts in atmospheric patterns, for this ongoing shift in the earth's magnetic field. This NASA finding affirms Cayce's prediction of a pole shift."

The magnetic poles are constantly drifting. They will be in a different location tomorrow than they are today and that's been known for a long long time ..what's the big deal ? We've known that since the 1800's. Here's a good site on the topic,
