1) The poles are not shifting. They meander slowly, but they only switch polarities after many thousands of years.
2) Planet X has nothing to do with NASA. In fact NASA (like most every astronomical organization in the world) denies the existence of Planet X.
3) The current cycle of the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012. The Mayans made no predictions regarding this.
4) None of these things have any scientific basis, let alone anything to do with economics or government.

I think Mr. Frink has the right of it. They're all a crock of bullshit (especially the government, political, economic, etc. connections) ☺

The 2012 doomsday prophecy is a hoax, and there is plenty of scientific evidence that the world will *not* end in 2012:
The earth's poles will not abruptly reverse. The geographic poles can't; it's physically impossible for the earth to reverse its rotation or be physically "flipped over." The magnetic poles can and do reverse, about every 200,000 years on average, but this is a gradual process which takes thousands of years.
The earth is not going to get hit by a giant planet. The fictitious planet Nibiru/Planet X is supposedly five times the size of the earth. An object this large would be visible in backyard telescopes decades before it could approach, and its gravity would be affecting the orbits of everything else in the solar system.
The Maya didn't predict the end of the world, or anything else other than the motions of the sun, moon, and planets. Their calendar is excellent at counting days, but that's all it does, and in 2012 it simply reaches the end of a cycle. They had specific names for periods of time in the millions of years; if they thought the world was going to end after a cycle of less than 6000 years, why would they bother?
Some of the doomsday believers interpret the Mayan calendar and other sources, including the Bible, as predicting a spiritual upheaval rather than a purely physical catastrophe. According to these people, any random significant event may be seen as an omen "proving" their predictions. However, volcanoes, economic recessions, and world-government conspiracies have occurred many times in the past without the end of the world ensuing, so why should this time be any different?
As for some of the other 2012 "predictions"…
The sun will not line up with the center of the Milky Way (it can't; the center of the galaxy is in the wrong part of the sky). The planets are not going to align (it's physically impossible; and even if they could, their combined gravity wouldn't be enough to disrupt anything on earth). The sun will not flare up and poison the earth (it goes through regular 11-year cycles of solar flare activity, and 2012 is just another peak). Nostradamus didn't give any specific dates for anything (he was too smart to make that mistake in his "predictions", which the 2012 doomsayers aren't). The Bible makes no date-specific predictions, either.
Do you remember the Y2K doomsday predictions? The 2012 doomsday predictions are just as accurate. The people behind the 2012 hysteria are in it for the money. They sell lots of books and videos to people who don't know any better. A lot of them were saying the same thing about 2003, and when the earth survived they picked 2012 because of the supposed significance of the Mayan calendar. When 2012 comes and goes and we're all still here, they'll just pick another date and sell more books and videos.
