It sure would be fun if every major event in the world were foretold in enigmatic and vague mystical or religious texts. But that's not the case.
This DVD set made for very interesting viewing. It covered the writings and a little bit of the life of Nostradamus and had interviews with people who believe he predicted the end of the world in 2012. The narrator's voice was deep and dramatic, and the mucis and images of the features really added to the entertainment value. Unfortunately, the documentaries on these DVD's were almost entirely from the perspective of people who believe in Nostradamus. Skeptics were all but absent.
The first feature documentary was "The Lost Book of Nostradamus," that looked at a book of drawings attributed to Nostradamus that was recently found at a library in Rome. They didn't even say until the feature was about 2/3 over that he probalby didn't draw the pictures and none of the handwriting matched his. I also took issue with the fact that people interpret the images based on what's happening in the newspaper now instead of on the context in which they were produced. I'll give two examples of what I mean. First, many of the "experts" in the feature said that the picture of a burning tower was a premonition of the 9/11 attacks. They never said that a burning tower is a card in the Tarot deck, and therefore the artist probably was referring to that, not to something centuries in the future. For another example, several of the pictures have a wheel with eight spokes at the top, and one of the "experts" said that that is a reference to the "galactic alignment" that will take place in 2012 when the sun eclipses the center of the galaxy. The problem is, in the age of Nostradamus, the eight spokes of the Wheel in the Tarot deck represent the eight celestial spheres they believed in, and therefore the artist of the Lost Book probably wasn't referring to an astrological event to take place centuries from when he or she lived.
The second feature documentary was "Nostradamus 2012," which looked at the prophecies of Nostradamus along with the Mayan calendar, the Egyptian pyramids, Freemasonry and the Bible code. Like the other feature in this set, there was little skepticism depicted in the feature, and the texts it was based on were so vague they could apply to any time, not necessairly just our own. The interpretations of the various data were very speculative, but presented as authoritative.
The bonus feature in this set was "Nostradamus 500 Years Later," that looked at the life of Nostradamus in more detail than the two feature documentaries. It was the only content in the set that had interviews with skeptics and people who looked at the prophecies of Nostradamus critically. It's unfortunate, in my opinion, that this was in the section labeled "bonus" and therefore probably won't be watched by many viewers.
So in short, this was a fun set of documentaries to watch, but I think I'll look elsewhere if I want to do some serious learning about Nostradamus and his writings.
