Well- Nostradamus never said that we would end in 2012- only that there would be a catastrophic change.
I think the whole 2012 thing was from the Mayan Calender. And no. I do not think it was true. The poor guy who chiseled that calender probably had a heart attack from pounding at that rock day in and day out and the stupid thing never was finished. The end.

But I tell ya one thing. If I had the money to do it I would get a friggin lawn chair, go down to south america with a cooler filled with Corona or Tecate, and camp out at the top of one of those pyramids on the actual end day just to see if it would happen. You are so invited my friend! What do you think? Free Barbecue!!!

Question by The Cat's Meow: "Doomsday 2012" – Solar storms, will it affect us?
I know this is a redundant topic, but I'm just curious as to what people think is going to happen in our near future? I'm not talking about the whole "Mayan prophecy end of days" stuff, but about the solar storms that scientist are predicting to occur around 2011-2012. Do you think that it will happen? If so, do you think it will interfere with our satellites and blow out all of our electric grids? Or do you think that it will just pass by without us noticing like it does every 11 years?

If you do think that this solar storm will affect our satellites and electricity, then what do you think will become of our planet? It would be like going back in time 100 years.
I believe that I clearly said my question was NOT about the Mayan prophecy but about solar storms, which do happen. Crack a book.

Some time ago there was a calculation that the next peak in solar activity would be higher than usual. However since then the estimates have been revised downwards and it may be that the next peak will be about average.

In addition, last I heard the peak is likely to come in the first half of 2013, probably about March.

While it is possible that power transmission will be affected, this is most likely where the systems are already strained. This sort of thing generally lasts a few hours or days at the most even where power transmission systems are strained.

Power transmission engineers often deal with this by load shedding, which is turning off power in some areas while maintaining it in others, then swapping over, typically for an hour or 90 minutes at a time. In some systems, water heaters and air conditioners can be turned off remotely, and these may be turned off by the engineers to reduce load. Lighting and other systems will still work.

As for communications, for those dependent on satellites there may be trouble, though satellites have special electronics and shielding to withstand exactly that sort of thing. Much ground based communication is now by optical fibre cable and that is unlikely to be affected at all.
