Question by robert f: Why do some people predict "Dooms day?"?
In the astronomy & space section of Yahoo! Answers, I post and respond. I noticed that some people in astronomy & space are predicting the world will end in 2012. Yesterday, "Nostradamus 2012" was on the History Channel. What makes people even think about the world ending? Some people do not just think about the world ending, but they try to convince people that xyz predicted the world will end. Just because the date is changing or the Mayan calender is starting a new cycle does not mean the world will end.

What makes people think this way?

The Doomsday sayers have been with the Human race as long as there has been a human race. Why their thinking takes them to this, I'll never understand.

It is said that depending on how one interprets the many quatrains that Nostradamus wrote,different "prophecies"can be extracted from them.I was wondering if anyone can work the tragic sinking of the Titanic into one of them?

Of course.

There are many who will tell you that Nostradamus predicted 9/11, Kennedy's assassination, Pearl Harbor, the American Revolution, and the invention of the paper clip.

The Mayan Calendar ends December 21, 2012. But did the Mayans predict that anything would happen on that day?

No one disagrees that the Mayan calendar ends – for what ever reason – in December of the year 2012. Some day its December 21st and some say its December 23rd.

Anyway, did the Mayans actually tell us what would happen when their calendar ends?

I don't get it. But it is very interesting.

I was reading some stuff on the web that says that Nostradamus predicted that in 2012 the rogue planet Nibiru would either crash into earth or disrupt our gravitational field by grazing the earth's atmosphere on Dec 21, 2012. What can we do to prepare?

I'd like to know when did Nostradamus (Michel de Nostredame) predict that the world will end.. like in what year, and exactly how?

Also, please give me opinions on when you think that the world would end, and how, and also why.

And.. also, why did you think that we exist? How did God create us and what are we living for?

I mean that's a pretty big one to miss, that conquistadors are going to arrive and destroy what's left of your empire. but make some ambiguous reference to the end of the world and suddenly every alien-fearing american is wetting their panties and taking you seriously
