I am looking for some scholarly research that has been done on why people find prophecies so fascinating and important. I mean, people take Nostradamus very seriously, but I wonder why. Is it because we are obsessed with the future? Maybe we're hoping that if we know ahead of time what is going to happen, somehow we can profit from it or avoid a catastrophe. My main interest is in scholarly research as to why people feel the need to predict things, but I am particularly interested in so-called prophecies, mainly "doomsday" prophecies. Supposedly if we "know" what is predicted it gives us more control over our lives. People predict the Super Bowl winner like anyone really cares anyway. What's the point? I don't get it. I'm looking for scholarly research on humans' obsession with the future, predictions, prophecies etc. My hunch is that our preoccupation with the future is tied to our desire for control of our lives.
